Delegates headed back to their workplaces with a renewed determination to campaign for LGBT+ workers rights and equality

On Saturday 24 February, our regional self-organised LGBT+ group officially launched UNISON’s year of LGBT+ workers with an event in Taunton.

The event was attended by over 50 UNISON members, both from within the LGBT+ community and allies.

Speakers included UNISON South West regional secretary, Kerry Baigent, Plymouth councillor, Dylan Tippets and UNISON’s national head of equality, Josie Irwin.

Delegates attended workshops on trans allyship and organising around LGBT+ workers rights. Feedback from both sessions indicated lively and positive discussions.

For Dylan Tippets, the first trans councillor to be elected in the South West, the day included ticking something off his councillor bucket list – drawing a raffle ticket in a raffle that raised over £90 for UNISON’s There for You charity.

Overall it was an enjoyable and productive day, our regional LGBT+ self organised group welcomed new members and delegates headed back to their workplaces with a renewed determination to campaign for LGBT+ workers rights and equality.
