UNISON South West LGBT+ group fights discrimination and prejudice in the workplace on behalf of our members who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, plus.
The “plus” in LGBT+ aims to include the wide range of groups and identities that make up the wider LGBT+ communities. You may have seen this described as LGBTIQA+ in other places. UNISON members voted at the national delegate conference in 2019 just to add “+” to try and future-proof the name of the group as we acknowledge that identities and definitions are always developing. We include ace / aro (asexual and aromantic) identities within the “+” in UNISON.
We organise through an elected LGBT+ regional committee who meet at least four times a year to plan our campaigns.
We are very high profile at many pride events in the South West taking our messages of equality and standing up for public services to the wider LGBT+ community.

LGBT+ inclusion checklist
2024 was UNISON’s year of LGBT+ workers. We want all our
workplaces to make sure that our workplace policies are as
inclusive as they can be.
We have created a check list of what your policies
should include for LGBT+ inclusion. If you are missing
any of these, check out our factsheets, which will
provide further information (links below). We are also
encouraging members to submit these forms to the equality unit at UNISON Centre (via the SW regional office team), so we can track where our workplaces are with LGBT+ inclusion.
