Council workers lobby to save services in Somerset

“Local people didn’t cause this crisis, but they’re the ones likely to feel its pinch.”

Council workers in Somerset will today (Wednesday) lobby a council meeting where a package of proposed cuts are to due be discussed, says UNISON.

Cuts to staff and services are on the agenda as Somerset Council meets to plan how to deal with a £87m funding deficit.

Local authority workers are lobbying outside the meeting in Bridgwater to voice their concern over the future of public services across the county. UNISON representatives will be present to ask councillors questions about the financial emergency and the impact of any cuts on local communities and staff.

UNISON branch secretary Alison Hann said: “The financial emergency is terrible news for council workers as well as everyone who lives here. Local people didn’t cause this crisis, but they’re the ones likely to feel its pinch.

“Across Somerset, communities depend on the many services the council provides, and the scale of the council’s financial shortfall is so great multiple services could well be cut.

“UNISON will do all it can to save services in Somerset. Today’s lobby is just the start.”
