Commenting on the latest inflation figures published today (Wednesday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“The pressure on household incomes is relentless. Surging prices are ravaging family finances to such an extent that hard-up low earners can barely afford the basics.
“With wages in the doldrums as prices sprint ahead, the government must act to halt falling living standards. Far from causing the inflation spiral, real wage rises are the route out of the crisis.
“An inflation-proofed wage boost for staff across the NHS, care, local government, police and schools would help ease widespread financial hardship, and protect essential services.
“A decent pay rise might prove just enough to persuade key workers to stay. Anything less could see many head for the exit in search of jobs and salaries better able to shield them from the growing prices storm.”
