Roe v Wade – a statement from UNISON South West

We reaffirm our commitment to support all women having the right to bodily autonomy.

South West Regional Committee condemns unreservedly the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States on 24th June 2022 to remove the constitutional and fundamental healthcare right of millions of American women to obtain an abortion.

We further note with alarm that the wider judgment also questions other rights which were hard won, such as equal marriage and we need to be ready for further attacks.

We also condemn the remarks of Danny Kruger, MP for Devizes who questioned in Parliament whether or not pregnant women do have bodily autonomy.  These outrageous comments show that there are still those who oppose women having rights over their own body and would remove their basic capacity to decide what is best for them.

We reaffirm our commitment to support all women having the right to bodily autonomy, to choose whether or not abortion is right for them and to access safe abortions, quickly and locally.
