Regional Health and Safety Forum & AGM – BOOKING CLOSED

Text based graphic for UNISON South West's regional health and safety forum and AGM happening at Croyde Bay from 30th September to 1st October 2022.

30 September – 1 October 2022

Croyde Bay, North Devon

The theme for our event this year is Wellbeing is a Health & Safety issue – the impact of the pandemic in workplaces, the rising cost of living and public service funding shortages has been a triple hit for our members.

Our members are over worked and under valued which is having a negative impact on wellbeing and mental health. Our Regional Health & Safety Committee want the forum this year to show why wellbeing and mental health are health and safety issues, empower you to turn learning into action and use wellbeing and mental health organising as a powerful tool which runs through activity.

The forum will consist of the following:

  • A series of interactive workshops
  • Guest speakers
  • Plenary sessions
  • Formal learning
  • Networking

BOOKING NOW CLOSED

The forum and AGM is open to all UNISON Branch Health and Safety officers and Health and Safety representatives in the workplace.

Workshops

Once registration closes on the 11th September delegates will be contacted to select their preferred workshops. The plenary session and Learning into Action sessions are for all delegates and do not form part of the preference exercise.

Mental health and wellbeing at work are health & safety issues
Hilda Palmer from the Hazards Campaign will be delivering this session. She has been campaigning for safer workplaces for over 30 years and in 2020 was named as the Most Influential Individual in Health and Safety. This session will explore why mental health and wellbeing at work are health and safety issues, dispelling myths and show how you can turn issues into action in your workplace!

Looking after you
Regional organising staff, Sophie Jones and Charlie Woods, will be delivering this session – having both been UNISON activists in the past they are well placed to deliver this interactive session which unpicks the positives and challenges of being a union activist. Group discussions will share lived experience bolstered by advice and practical action you can take away to be an effective rep whilst to reduce the risk of burn out, overloading and undue stress.

Using mental health and wellbeing to organise in the workplace
Mark Everden, from the Regional Education & Equalities Team, will be delivering this workshop. Mental health and wellbeing should be at the forefront of health and safety activist minds, they are powerful tools to organise and champion issues in the workplace. This session will identify key issues and how you can turn them into campaigns, retention and recruitment opportunities.

Plenary – Thompson’s Solicitors have a wealth of knowledge and experience in pursing and winning PI claims, at this year’s event Nicholas Seymour will give a summary of regional cases and an update on the increase in asbestos claims which has seen a resurgence over the last 12 months.

Learning into Action – following the formal learning Mark, Sophie and Charlie will deliver a whole delegation exercise to turn learning into action. Delegates will be asked to make a pledge which they will take forwards to champion and promote wellbeing and mental health being a health and safety issue in branches / workplaces.
