A delegation from UNISON South West’s Labour Link Committee travelled to Glasgow last week (Thursday 4 July) to take part in the annual National Labour Link Forum.

The date marked exactly one year since the Labour Party was elected into government. Delegates heard from newly elected MPs and long-time UNISON allies Katrina Murray and Deirdre Costigan. Both spoke about the Labour government’s achievements over the past year and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening workers’ rights, investing in public services and delivering more affordable homes.

South West delegates played an active role in shaping UNISON’s political priorities, speaking in favour of key motions including:

  • Stronger rights and protections for migrant workers, including a new Certificate of Common Sponsorship

  • Proper funding for local government to help deliver Labour’s programme

  • Ending outsourcing in the NHS and opposing the creation of wholly-owned subsidiary companies (SubCos)

  • Continuing UNISON’s campaigning work to protect women and girls from violence

Delegates also took part in workshops exploring how to boost Labour Link sign-ups when members join the union online. This comes ahead of expected reforms through the Employment Rights Bill, which will remove the requirement for separate payments to Labour Link.

The next South West Labour Link Committee meeting will take place in September ahead of Labour Party Conference.
