Phlebotomists at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General hospitals are now five weeks into their fight for fair pay – and the picket line shows no signs of slowing down.
These specialist NHS workers, who take vital blood samples to support diagnosis and treatment, have now completed 21 days of strike action as they campaign to be paid properly for the skilled work they do.
What began last year as a small group raising concerns over pay and banding has grown into an unstoppable force for change. One of the phlebotomists said:
“When we started this journey last year, only 2 out of 40 of us were in UNISON. Now, 100% of us are members, including our Band 3 supervisors. We’ve just hit 21 days of strike action and have the strength to keep going until our demands are met. The mood on our picket line has been fun and vibrant, with music, cake, and lots of support from other hospital staff and members of the public.”
These NHS workers have brought unwavering spirit and solidarity to every strike day. They’ve turned hospital entrances into hubs of union strength – complete with home-baked treats, handmade placards, and plenty of dancing to the picket line playlist.
Support from colleagues across the NHS and the wider public has made all the difference. Messages of solidarity and donations towards their strike fund have poured in from other UNISON branches.
These photos capture just some of the energy and unity on show throughout the dispute so far. As they head towards their sixth week of action, one thing’s clear – Gloucestershire phlebotomists are standing strong, standing together, and standing up for fair pay.
