UNISON delegates played a key role at this year’s South West TUC Conference and AGM, held on 14–15 March 2025 at Croyde Bay.
The event brought together trade union activists from across the region to discuss the challenges facing workers and the wider movement.
UNISON submitted an emergency motion addressing the de-recognition of UNISON by HCRG. The motion, moved by regional secretary Kerry Baigent, was carried unanimously, with several speakers expressing strong support for UNISON’s stance.
Several UNISON members were elected to the South West TUC Executive Committee, including Karen Williams, Amanda Brown and Sharon Foster, while Kerry Baigent and Alison Evans secured automatic seats due to the union’s size.
Throughout the conference, UNISON delegates spoke on a range of pressing issues, including devolution, winter fuel poverty and public sector cuts. Adekunle Akinola and Lydia Kabute delivered a workshop on migrant workers, encouraging affiliates to support UNISON’s campaign for a Certificate of Common Sponsorship, which would grant greater employment flexibility for migrant care workers.
Karen Williams led a Women’s Fringe event, where delegates explored ideas for advancing women’s rights within the trade union movement. Special thanks must go to Thompsons Solicitors for sponsoring the refreshments.
UNISON South West remains committed to standing up for workers’ rights and strengthening the trade union movement across the region. Delegates left the conference inspired and ready to take forward key campaigns in the coming months.
