Migrant workers from across Dorset gathered at the RNLI in Poole on Friday 31 January for an engaging and productive event with local MP Neil Duncan-Jordan.
The meeting provided an opportunity for migrant worker members to discuss key issues affecting their working lives and learn how to engage effectively with their MPs. Emma Lang, head of office for Neil Duncan-Jordan MP, led a session on how to successfully engage with Parliament, offering insights into an MP’s work and how to ensure migrant worker concerns remain on the political agenda.
Neil Duncan-Jordan updated attendees on ongoing efforts in Westminster to push for reform of the visa system, which leaves many migrant workers vulnerable to exploitation. He also highlighted the positive engagement of Seema Malhotra MP, Minister for Immigration, who attended the recent Westminster Hall debate and has expressed willingness to listen to UNISON members’ concerns.
Attendees also discussed the upcoming South West Migrant Worker Charter, which aims to prevent the commissioning of exploitative organisations and improve workplace conditions. Similar work in Salford has successfully influenced local commissioning practices.
UNISON South West regional organiser Janine Miller said: “Migrant workers are the backbone of many public services, yet too often they face unfair treatment and exploitation. This event was an important step towards strengthening their rights and ensuring their voices are heard by decision-makers.
“We welcome the support from Neil Duncan-Jordan and Seema Malhotra, but real change will only come through continued campaigning and pressure. UNISON will remain steadfast in ensuring migrant workers receive the fair treatment and protections they deserve.”
