Migrant workers in Taunton have raised concerns about restrictive visa rules with their local MP, Gideon Amos, during his weekend constituency surgery.
The workers, supported by UNISON, outlined the challenges faced by migrant healthcare staff, including Tier 2 visa rules that tie them to a single employer. These restrictions leave many workers vulnerable to exploitation and limit their ability to move jobs within the health and care sector.
Following the meeting, Gideon has committed to signing the Early Day Motion (EDM) tabled by Labour MP Neil Duncan-Jordan, which calls for reform of the Tier 2 visa system and the introduction of a Certificate of Common Sponsorship. This proposed reform would enable migrant healthcare workers to change employers within the sector without risking their visa status.
Gideon has also pledged to meet with UNISON activists in January to discuss the issues further and explore other ways to support migrant workers.
UNISON South West regional secretary Kerry Baigent said: “Gideon’s decision to back the Early Day Motion and meet with UNISON activists is a positive step forward. However, it’s clear there’s still work to do to ensure migrant workers have the security and rights they need to work without fear.”
