Cornwall council redundancies ‘heavy blow’, says UNISON

It’s completely unacceptable that council employees are being made to bear the burden from financial chaos they didn’t cause

Commenting on the annoucement of over 100 job losses at Cornwall Council UNISON South West regional organiser Emily Gallagher said today (Friday):

“Announcing redundancies just before Christmas is a heavy blow for Cornwall Council staff and their families. The festive season should be a time of joy and stability, but now many are left facing significant uncertainty about their future.

“The real reason behind these redundancies is the chronic underfunding of local authorities by central government over the past decade and more. It’s completely unacceptable that council employees are being made to bear the burden from financial chaos they didn’t cause.

“UNISON will work closely with Cornwall Council to reduce the impact on staff. The focus must be on protecting jobs and safeguarding the essential services the people of Cornwall rely upon.”
