2024 marked UNISON’s Year of LGBT+ Workers, and the South West has been at the forefront of celebrations, activism, and achievements.
Our regional LGBT+ self-organised group (SOG) kicked off the year of LGBT+ workers with a landmark event in Taunton. Attended by over 50 members and allies, the event featured workshops on trans allyship and LGBT+ workers’ rights. Guest speakers included Dylan Tippets, the first trans councillor in the South West, who inspired attendees with his journey and advocacy.
As ever, Pride season was a highlight, with our LGBT+ activists making their presence felt across the region. From the celebrations at Exeter Respect to the warm community spirit at smaller events like Bodmin and Tavistock, LGBT+ members engaged with thousands of attendees, championing equality and raising awareness about the union’s work.
After the rain and wind stopped play in 2023, Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival made its triumphant return in July. Our LGBT+ SOG organised group curated an incredible line-up of speakers, performers, and workshops in our UNIZONE and on Sunday we marched (and danced) our way through the village with the brilliant Bristol Sambistas samba band.
In September, the SOG brought vibrant colour to Taunton Pride. Despite grey skies and drizzle, members took to the streets with rainbow umbrellas, spreading joy and solidarity. Their participation at Taunton Pride was coupled with the group’s AGM, where members reflected on progress, elected key roles, and planned future campaigns.
Edinburgh hosted UNISON’s national LGBT+ conference in November where our regional LGBT+ SOG secured the prestigious recruitment and organising award. This accolade, awarded for the second year running, acknowledges the group’s outstanding efforts in growing membership and organising.
Regional LGBT+ convenor Micheál Duffy said:
“The South West LGBT+ SOG has grown by over 50% over the last 12 months. Members have continued to get involved in their branches and region, attending events like Exeter Respect, Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival, and numerous local Pride celebrations. This award reflects our members’ hard work and dedication.”
Looking ahead, the group is determined to build on this momentum. Plans are already underway for another year of impactful campaigns, training sessions, and Pride participation.
Join us in 2025
As we move into the new year, we invite all LGBT+ UNISON members in the South West to join us. Together, we can continue to make workplaces fairer, more inclusive, and supportive for everyone.
