Understanding the Law on Equality & Discrimination. Equality is at the heart of UNISON’s actions and values.

Understanding Trade Union Law. The UK has some of the most restrictive legislation on what trade unions can do, and how we operate.

This Course is aimed at new and previously untrained Health and Safety Representatives.

This is a one-day course aimed at helping stewards communicate effectively with members from an organising perspective. It provides an opportunity to develop skills in a variety of communication methods including starting conversations, managing discussions, listening to members’ views, and using emails and other media.

The law on whistleblowing is often misunderstood. This will dispel the myths.

This course is aimed at both newly elected stewards and experienced activists/officers. It introduces the principle of mentoring as a means of support for new stewards.

UNISON recognises that everyone has an equal right to protection from harm at work, but that doesn’t mean treating everyone as if they were all the same. For example, jobs that people do, their working conditions and how they are treated by society are not always the same. The course will provide an opportunity to examine workplace policies including the application of workplace sickness absence policies and capability procedures which might be penalising women members more harshly for short term absences for e.g., problems related to menstrual such as fibroids, endometriosis, or the menopause.

The course reinforces some approaches and procedures introduced in the 5-day organising stewards course and explores learning in more detail.

Equality is written into our rule book and into our objectives and policies but making equality part of everyday business is no small task. Making equality central to your union practice is a course that explores internal and external tools, which can support equality bargaining, negotiating, and representation. The course also looks at how to identify equality themes in organising and recruitment, as well as considering the different equality roles in UNISON and how you can utilise their support.

To give you an understanding of dismissals of employment

This course is designed to meet the requirements of the Employment Relations Act (ERA) recertification, which states that Stewards need to update their skills and training every 5 years. It involves group work and discussion. It is also a good opportunity to network and share ideas and experiences.
