UNISON working in collaboration with Mindfulness UK (https://www.mindfulnessuk.com/) This course will also be supporting research with Newcastle University.

1. Why – we want to support the many anecdotal reports we have of the positive impact of the course with hard research. This will give even greater credence to the efficacy of the course and we can further describe the likely outcomes for participants.
2. What – each participant will be invited to complete 3 assessment scales (simple on-line questionnaires) which will their self-rating across mindfulness, compassion and resilience. These will be completely anonymous because we wont use names but a simple code that only the researchers will see.
3. When – we will ask participants to complete these at the start of the program, at the end of the program and 3 months after completion to give us a “before” and “after” picture as well as a sense of how sustainable the benefits are beyond the direct experience of the course.
4. How long – should only take about 10 mins per person at each stage.
5. Benefits – in taking part in the research they will be contributing to our collective understanding of the course and in doing so provide more evidence that will attract future users to also experience the positive effects of the course.

What are our courses like?
Our courses are friendly and informal. Our training is aimed at making
learning a fun rather than a daunting experience. Everyone’s views and experiences are listened to. You will not be lectured at and given every opportunity to participate and there is no exam at the end unlike school or college. We have guidance on this under our ” Working together guidelines”

Points to consider
Where are you going to be doing the online course? In a busy or loud
environment which may be distracting? Somewhere where you are likely to be interrupted? If possible find a quiet space to complete the course either at work or at home. What equipment are you going to use? To access all of our E-learning courses, you will need a tablet or computer. If you are using your employer’s IT equipment, then make sure you have permission to use it for a trade union course. Most facility agreements allow you to use employer equipment, but check with your branch if you are unsure. Ensure that you have access to use ZOOM or TEAMs.
