Somerset Health and Local Government & Community branches are looking for someone with excellent administrative and clerical skills to support the branch office team.
About this job
The Somerset Local Government and Community branch is a busy branch of nearly 6,000 members mainly in local government, schools and care providers. The Somerset Health branch has over 2,000 members, mainly employed by the local NHS trust, and also covers some private nursing care providers. The branches cover many employers over a large geographical area.
The branches are run by branch committees made up of elected officers, who are members of UNISON. The branches provide advice and representation to members on issues at work, and also undertake collective bargaining on local terms and conditions of employment.
Skills/experience required:
- Confident in use of computer software packages, particularly Microsoft Office.
- Proven ability to contribute to efficient running of office functions.
- Ability to present information in written or oral form in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both staff and members at all levels.
- Experience of dealing sensitively with enquiries from people who may be upset or angry.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times with an understanding of GDPR.
- Experience of organising and prioritising own workload
- Ability to work on own initiative and as a member of a team.
- Keyboard skills
- An understanding of and commitment to the principles of equality and democracy.
- A general understanding of employment issues
- An understanding of the role of trade unions and the social and political environment in which the union operates.
