Plans to cut the pay of Torbay refuse collectors because of the impact of the coronavirus crisis are ‘cynical and unnecessary’, says UNISON.
The workers employed by TOR2 – a partnership between Torbay Council and Kier Group – were told today (Friday) they’d face mandatory pay cuts and possible job losses due to the impact of Covid-19.
UNISON, which represents the workers recently described by the Government as ‘essential’, is baffled by the TOR2 move. Unlike other businesses hit by the pandemic TOR2 will see no reduction in the funding it receives between now and the end its contract July.
Several grades of staff including waste collection supervisors are being asked to take pay cuts – ranging from 7.5% to 20% – as managers attempt to drive down costs and boost profits, says UNISON.
UNISON South West regional organiser Oliver Foster-Burnell said; “We can’t understand the thinking behind cutting wages at a time when these key workers are especially valuable and needed.
“It sends out a very powerful message to the households of Torbay that the quality of the service they receive comes second to making a profit.
“We call on TOR2 managers to urgently come to the negotiating table to resolve this situation as quickly and amicably as possible.”
